People are always surprised to hear that I’ve never eaten animal meat in my entire life. For what feels like forever, we’ve been conditioned to think of meat and animal products as a cornerstone of healthy living.
After a lifetime of defending my lifestyle choices, I’m no longer interested in debating old myths about not being able to effectively build and maintain muscle on a plant-based diet, because it’s simply not true.
I spent my childhood on the South coast of England, frustrating my mum with an eclectic, and unsanctioned, collection of ‘pets’, including cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, snails, ants, sea monkeys, and stick insects. When I wasn’t adopting any animal I could find, I busied myself making ‘potions’ out of various household items, including mum’s expensive toiletries, and bleach. I was always fascinated with art and colour, and experienced intense synesthesia as a child (a condition that causes you to see numbers, places and people as colours). I was asked once to write out the alphabet at school, and instead scribbled blocks of colour, much to the confusion of my teachers.
After graduating in English Literature, I moved to London and headed into the corporate world, before quickly realising it wasn’t where my passions lay. Eventually, I quit to start working as a trainee chef at a vegan/veggie cafe in North London. I credit the Venezuelan owners for influencing many of the creations I make today, including my first ever viral recipe, black bean arepas, and also for the love of unintentionally cold coffee.
It was a dream of mine to own and operate a vegan food van, travelling round the UK festival circuit during the summer months. I was working a desk job and saving pennies for this dream when the pandemic struck, so I started my Instagram account and decided to invest in a personal training qualification instead, and the rest is pretty much history. One day you might still see me at Glastonbury in my second-hand food van, selling lime lollies, and taking payment in monopoly money.
